Sycamore Gap

Self-Guided Best of the Wall

Take Your Pick - 50 or 30?

50 miles - On a Five Night Break you have four full days to explore Hadrian's Wall. In four days it's possible to walk the 50-mile stretch between Carlisle (with places of interest such as Carlisle Castle, Tullie House Museum & Cathedral) and Heddon-on-the-Wall or Corbridge (where the Roman Base of Corstopitum is situated).

30 miles - Alternatively, you could choose to walk a shorter 30 miles distance, between near Brampton and Chollerford, giving yourself more time to explore the likes of Lanercost Priory, Birdoswald, the Roman Army Museum, Aesica, Vindolanda, Housesteads, Chesters and of course all of the famous sites on the Wall itself - Walltown, Winshields Crags, Steel Rigg, Peel Crag, Sycamore Gap, Sewingshields Crags, the Milecastles, Turrets, Bridges, Forts...

Seven Levels of Accommodation to Choose from

'Top of the Range' Accommodation

The Best - Fit for a Roman Senator - As good as it gets in each location

Definition of V Denarii - V Denarii is the level grading we use to label what we consider to be the best available accommodation within a particular area, both in terms of where it is and what facilities it provides. It could be that it's a hotel recognised for its high quality decor and restaurant, or it could be that you are staying in the best room that a Country Inn has to offer.

Who goes V Denarii? - If you consider that having suffered the rigours of the great outdoors during the day, you then deserve that extra bit luxury for your overnight stopover to relax and replenish in, then this level is as good as it gets for Hadrian's Wall.

Type of Accommodation - Whatever it is, City or Seaside Hotel, Country Inn or converted Farmhouse, the general guideline is that we will have arranged the highest level accommodation available in each location. The bedrooms will not only be that extra bit special, but often you will find it difficult to drag yourself away from the comforts of the bar or lounge. All the accommodations will be in a location that has easy access to the Hadrian's Wall Path.

Meals - V Denarii accommodations are particularly geared up with regard to their kitchens and the meals that they are able to provide. Breakfast is included within your booking and you may like to take advantage of the Packed Lunches that they can offer. You will also be able to enjoy an Evening Meal within the comfortable confines of the establishment itself - many of them being popular with local folk - although some accommodations only offer their unique dining experience to their overnight guests.

'Extra Special Top of the Range' Accommodation - We often recieve enquiries to see if we can arrange something 'extra special' for a special occasion and specifically get asked if we can set up a stay in a 'Castle'. The answer is usually 'Yes', depending on availability - however, it does cost a few more Denarii for that night and this also involves a slight detour from the Trail, so transportation to and from the castle needs to be factored in.

'Beyond the Ordinary' Accommodation

Extra Comfort - As you would expect for a Roman Tribune - Officer luxury in each location

Definition of IV Denarii - IV Denarii is the grading level we give to accommodations providing that little bit more than you might expect. It could be a unique location, fabulous decor, the extra effort given to hospitality, or perhaps outstanding cuisine.

Who goes IV Denarii? - If you're looking to enhance the whole experience of visiting Hadrian's Wall, combining the unique heritage with some of the area's unique accommodation gems, this level has rooms with more than just en-suite facilities - it takes you 'Beyond the Ordinary'...

Type of Accommodation - The accommodations are generally a mixture of B&Bs, converted Farmhouses and Country Inns - something different every night. In effect, these accommodations are probably best summed up as living up to the amazing landscape that you are walking through.

Meals - IV Denarii accommodations will not only provide Breakfast, they can also provide Packed Lunches on request. Beyond that, most serve Evening Meals, or there will be a good country pub nearby.

'Ordinary Standard Accommodation'

Traditional Comfort - As would have been expected by a Roman Centurion

Definition of III Denarii - If your preference at the end of a walking day is just for a basic nice comfy room with a hot shower en-suite, this is what we categorise as our III Denarii level.

Who goes III Denarii? - For those whose main aim is to come and see Hadrian's Wall, walking from one accommodation to another, and all that is required is the standard comforts and luxuries of a traditional B&B each night, the III Denarii level fits the bill.

Type of Accommodation - Accommodations are close to the Trail and in the main, they tend to be small B&Bs and old farmhouses - nothing too fancy, just somewhere to get a comfortable night's rest and more often than not, you will be pleasantly surprised at the hospitality.

Meals - Breakfast is included - usually a Full English Breakfast is provided and on the odd occasion it may be a generous Continental Breakfast that's on offer. Packed Lunches can usually be ordered the night before your walk. Evening meals tend to involve a visit to a local pub nearby.

'Standard Saver Accommodation'

Good Value Comfort - Just as a Roman Citizen would appreciate - fit for a Legionary

Definition of II Denarii - For those that are seeking to keep their accommodation costs as low as possible, but would still like to have the privacy of their own room at night, this is what we categorise as our II Denarii level.

Who goes II Denarii? -This level caters for those whose priority is walking the Trail and where they get their heads down at night is more a consideration for convenience, rather than what comforts may be on offer.

Type of Accommodation - Generally the accommodations are small B&Bs and occasionally it can be a room in a farmhouse. Sometimes your bed will be a bunkbed, more often it will be a standard single or double. Sometimes rooms may have en-suite facilities and at other times facilities may be shared with other guests. What the accommodations may lack in facilities, they are usually compensated for by the lovely hospitality provided by the proprietors.

Meals - Breakfast is included - occasionally it may just be a Continental Breakfast that's on offer, but usually a Full English option is available. Packed Lunches can usually be ordered the night before your walk. Evening meals tend to involve a visit to a local pub nearby.

'Limited Budget Accommodation'

Basic Comfort - a roof, a room, a bed, a meal - fit for a Roman Auxiliary

Definition of I Denarius - If your main concern is walking the Trail and you just want to get a bed for the night - usually a bunkbed in a shared dormitory with fellow walkers - this is what we label as our I Denarius level.

Who goes I Denarius? - This accommodation option level caters for those on a tight budget and can be regarded as particularly suitable for those with an adventurous spirit. It's a great way to meet and share stories with other walkers, as well as an opportunity to meet many of the local characters.

Type of Accommodation - The accommodations vary between city hostels, purpose-built bunkhouses and converted barns, conveniently located near to the Trail.

Meals - Breakfast is included - occasionally it may just be a Continental Breakfast that's on offer, but often a Full English option is available. Packed Lunches can usually be ordered the night before your walk. Evening meals tend to involve a visit to a local pub nearby - although some places have the facilities for you to cook your own meals.
